At Mighty Oaks, breakfast club is not just about breakfast. There is a variety of tasty and nutritional food on offer but, crucially, there is also the opportunity to play freely, before being taken to school, in a tailor made environment which is safe, supervised, and packed with exciting resources. The video below was taken on the spur of the moment. This day was no different from any other. I just happened to be there because someone was off ill. I was so proud of what we were offering and the experiences the children were enjoying that I thought I should give parents a ‘fly on the wall insight’. So I checked photo permissions and then got my camera out.
The video and photos were taken in the space of about twenty minutes and don’t include those children enjoying the games room or the art room downstairs.
In this video, it is clear that the children are so proud of what they have created together. They want to keep it, so they work together as a team, to achieve their goal. This is intrinsically motivated, freely chosen and personally directed play, which is the first principle of Play Working. *
The adult (behind the camera) is observing and supporting only when necessary: carefully, sensitively, NOT taking charge; allowing the children the autonomy to stretch the parameters of their physical and engineering skills and thereby gain the full enrichment from the endeavour. This is the second principle of Play Work: “ …The competent play worker always aims to provide opportunities for the individual child to achieve her or his full potential while being careful not to control the child’s direction or choice”. *( Take 10 for Play: from the national occupational standards).
We have worked over nearly 20 years to develop Mighty Oaks. Gaining our own premises has allowed us to explore our mission to the fullest and I found it inspirational to be there on that day. Perfection is always out of reach, we reach for the stars, but in doing so we may reach the tree tops and enjoy the view.
